Truphone enables Skype for the Iphone

Truphone has launched an application that allows users to place and receive Skype calls from an Iphone or Ipod Touch.
"Truphone believes this is one more step towards openness but more importantly a shining example of how Truphone has enabled conversations to become multi-mode - people regularly converse via text messages, instant messages as well as phone calls," Tom Carter, President Americas for Truphone, told IT Examiner. "With the addition of Skype and the instant messaging services, Truphone users can easily engage in these mix-mode conversations at any time across hundreds of millions of users."
Truphone CEO Geraldine Wilson expressed similiar sentiments. "The introduction of Skype calling and instant messaging represents yet another breakthrough for Truphone," said Wilson. "This allows Iphone and Ipod touch users to have a choice in how they stay in touch with friends and colleagues around the world?all within the one application."
Truphone-to-Skype communications are free, while Iphone owners can use Truphone Anywhere feature to make and receive Skype calls when not in a Wifi-accessible location for the price of a local call.
Truphone has also introduced two-way instant messaging capabilities for the Iphone and Ipod Touch. The software supports a number of popular applications, including MSN Messenger, Yahoo and Google Talk. In addition, consumers will be able to make and receive voice calls via the above-mentioned programmes.
A number of other companies have released mobile-based software to coincide with the Mac World 2009 kick-off. For example, Quickoffice has unveiled MobileFiles Pro, an application that offers editable Office functionality for both the Iphone and Ipod touch.
The upgrade provides users with the ability to edit and save Microsoft Excel spreadsheets in standard .xls format. MobileFiles Pro also supports Wifi file transfer to and from a desktop (Mac/PC), as well as synchronization for Apple MobileMe accounts.
"MobileFiles Pro is the first Iphone application that enables users to edit Excel documents. As a mobile professional, having access to documents while on the go is key but it's also extremely important to have the ability to edit those files," a Quickoffice spokesperson told IT Examiner. "We've beat the competition to the punch with this robust application. Besides the 125 features for editing Excel, you can also access and transfer files between a Mac or PC and an Iphone." X
