Wrong wrong wrong. Manually manage allows you to choose what songs you drag
onto your ipod/iphone etc. What you are talking about (itunes sucking in
all the songs) is a option in preferences->advanced->keep library organised
and the option to "copy files to library".

entirely different and unrelated feature.

OK, suppose you don't select to manually manage (I assume the opposite is
Automatic Management), what does it automatically synch to the phone? Is it
just items from the library sections, or is it going to find other files?

there are two options - sync everything, or sync selected playlists.
everything is everything, and selected playlists are the ones which you
choose, but they will still be automatically synced.

when you sync, either by syncing when attaching the ipod or by clicking
the sync button, the contents of the ipod will be updated to match
whatever you picked in itunes. if you want a song or video to not be
copied to the ipod, you can uncheck that particular item or create a
playlist that does not include it and sync that.
